What is an Uncirculated Gold Coin?

Basically an uncirculated (UNC) coin, whether it is gold, silver or made from any other metal, is a coin that has never been released for circulation into the public arena. Therefore an uncirculated gold eagle coin will be a brilliant, mint condition coin.

The United States Mint routinely releases sets of uncirculated mint coins whenever they instigate a new coin run. Uncirculated coins retain their value purely because they are mint and have therefore not been marked in any way, this condition is extremely important to a coin collector. Obviously a gold coin is already deemed valuable simply because of the metal it is made from, but to have a mint, uncirculated gold eagle coin makes it even more collectable and valuable. Interestingly gold coins which are purchased straight from a coin mint are quite often a really good deal because the price of that coin is not based on the current spot price but on the price of the gold when it was struck.

What is the Difference Between an Uncirculated and Proof Gold Coin

At first you may think there isn't really any difference between a proof or UNC coin. However, with a proof coin, you may well be getting an enhanced coin, the mint may have commissioned an artist to hand paint it or there may be extras on the coin when it was struck that are not on the normal coins due for circulation. Whilst having a proof set of gold coins is great, to the pure collector or numismatist the original coin in mint condition is the must have coin.
