The Double Eagle gold coin, also known as the St Gaudens Double Eagle or $20 dollar gold coin was produced by the United States Mint during the years 1907 - 1933. The St Gaudens Double Eagle gold coin is named after that of its designer, the sculptor Augustus St. Gaudens, who designed the obverse and reverse. St. Gaudens' mark appears on the obverse of the coin under the date.

Augustus St Gaudens was requested by President Roosevelt during the turn of the 20th century to help redesign the american coins.  Unfortunately St. Gaudens only lived to see the completion of the Double Eagle and Indian Eagle gold coins.  Considered by many to be the best ever designs of American coinage the Double Eagle is the current design used on American gold bullion coinage and was also voted the best American gold coin design.

The double eagle was the first coin in the United States to include roman numerals to depict the date (only on early 1907 coins). It was also the first gold coin that had the mintmark on the obverse side.

The Double Eagles were minted continuously until 1933, except for the during the years 1917-19, when no coins were struck.
